BIO
Hey you—I’m Marié, pronounced with Japanese vowel sounds, like “mar-ee-ayy.” You can even use the Japanese R, if you’re feeling fancy.
I write, sing lead vocals, and play flute for Sakai, an Alt Rock / Indie Soul project based in San Francisco. I’m joined by Audie Bethea (guitar), Brendon Daugherty (bass), Caroline Carter (drums), and Ryan DiCenzo (keys).
I use songwriting for expression and catharsis, letting emotional truth guide my lyricism. I often explore themes of loss and yearning, whether of a specific experience or a global feeling that maybe life could have, or should have, been different somehow.
I blend soulful, powerful vocals with arrangement and performance that feel raw, gritty, and have structural intrigue. I am influenced by a variety of genres for my writing, including Jazz, Celtic Folk, and Enka.
Lately my sonic inspirations include Radiohead, Matt Maeson, Hiatus Kaiyote, Hozier, and Lianne La Havas.
